How Do I Improve My Pottery Skills After Class?

The answer: Self-Critique!

In pottery, it is helpful to look at your finished work with a critical eye to help improve your skills and plan how to approach the next pot you make. It can be done in or out of class, with an instructor, in a pottery group, or simply by yourself! 

Here are 5 important categories that you may want to consider when looking at your finished piece:

Form and Shape

• Evaluate the overall form and shape of the pottery.
  • Does it visually look heavy, robust, delicate or fragile?
• Consider the proportions and balance of the piece.
  • Does it look top heavy, unstable, strong or light?

Technique

• Look at the consistency of the thickness of the walls, smoothness of surfaces, and precision in detailing.
  • Is the rim soft? Is the foot sharp? Are there tools marks and gouges? 
  • Is it heavy to hold? Is there extra weight that could have been trimmed away?

Functionality

• If the pottery is functional, evaluate how well it serves its intended purpose.
  • Can the rim withstand being knocked in the dishwasher? Is the bottom smooth to use with cutlery? Are there thin spots that could get chipped? 
• Consider the ergonomics and usability of the piece.
  • Will the mug handle be hard to hold once filled with liquid? Can you hold it safely when it’s hot? Does it wobble when you set it down?

Creativity and Originality

• Consider if the piece brings a unique perspective or if it follows traditional styles.
  • Does it bring comfort and practicality? Or ingenuity to an age-old problem?

Surface Treatment

• Examine the surface finishes, such as glazes, textures, and any decorative elements.
  • Does it invite calmness? Is it energetic and lively? Does the decoration tell a story? Is the pattern too busy? Does my eye draw to the parts I want to showcase?

Remember that thinking about this is an opportunity for growth and learning, so it's important to approach it with a positive and constructive mindset!
