Every year the pottery, paint and plant sale is hosted by myself and the Developmental Services of Leeds & Grenville Fundraiser. And this year is no different. The What? I have been sharing my love of pottery and art with people of all ages and abilities for many years. For many of my students this brings a sense of accomplishment. This sale allows you to buy beautiful pottery making your garden look like the sanctuary it is, to connect with the Brockville DSLG services, and to meet the artist behind your art purchase. We also do a call out for plant donations around the same time to make the show a one-stop shop for updating your garden and outdoor aesthetic. This fundraiser is one of the most affordable places for plant purchases, and it only lasts 3 hours. Which means....you snooze you lose - so get here early. The Why? This unique program allows everyone to express themselves through art. Purchasing a piece of original art will help the artists to feel validated and proud to contribute to their community! Artists also receive 50% of their sales, encouraging them to create more masterpieces! Information on upcoming classes will also be available on the day. 50% of funds raised go straight back into providing pottery classes hosted through Developmental Services of Leeds and Grenville. The Where? My talented pottery students welcome the public to the 8th Annual Pottery, Paint and Plant Sale on Saturday, May 26th 9:00 a.m-12:30. The sale will be held at Developmental Services of Leeds and Grenville, Central Park Connection. Do you want to donate?
Donations of perennials and houseplants plants for the fundraiser sale are welcome. Spring is a great time to divide and transplant perennials, it’s the perfect time of year to share and find something new. If you are able to donate, please bring potted and labelled plants to the Studio on Wednesday May 23rd between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (or contact Caroline Guildboard: cguildboard@developmentalservices.com to make alternative arrangements). Whatever your age, pottery has extensive benefits. For children, there are even more positive effects of indulging in clay play and creation. I'm going to bet you don't know all the ways that art creation, especially ceramic creativity, can seriously benefit your kids. 10 Reasons Your Kids Should be Creating with Clay
1. Motor Skill Development Think of all the pounding, pinching, flattening, tearing, poking, squeezing, bending, coiling...that's a lot of motor skill practice! 2. Tactile Therapy The tactile nature of clay can be a physical outlet for kids, releasing emotion and reducing stress. 3. Adulthood Innovation Childhood participation in creation leads to innovation in adulthood. 4. Self Esteem Clay is easy to move and shape. Using clay can leave kids feeling in charge, which can lead to more confidence communicating their thoughts. 5. Discipline There are rules when it comes to clay, e.g. keep clay thinner, thin tails should attach to the body, score and slip attachments. Kids learn that the little details make a big difference. 6. Improving Sensory Development Pottery classes gently stimulate, which is perfect for sensory development. Pottery allows kids to absorb information at their own pace. 7. Problem Solving Building with clay means dealing with pesky gravity and the unique properties of clay, which promotes problem-solving skills. 8. Out of the Box Thinking It's thought that creative exploration encourages rewiring of the brain. This can later develop into out-of-the-box thinking. 9. Expression Kids are able to express imagination in whatever form. This expression is linked to self-esteem, but also in strengthening communication skills in a new way. 10. Pride and Accomplishment Kids get to start with something raw and make it into something solid. An expression of their creation which lasts. Awesome, Proud, Moment (TM).
